The Ostrava district is situated in the Ostrava-Karviná coal basin. Since the past Ostrava has been well-known as an important industrial centre with steel works, iron works and coal mines. However, besides the industry the town has established a large educational network covering not only the technical but also scholastic institutions, such as philosophical, medicine and arts universities. The Ostrava surroundings, especially the picturesque Beskydy are very among holiday makers and tourists all the year round and the skiing centres, as well as summer holiday centres offer a variety of opportunities for holiday making and sport activities.
